Level of injury: T7 flaccid complete

  • Motor system: no movement below T7.
  • Sensory level: no sensibility below T7.
  • Bowels: feels when her bowels are full; evacuation by digital stimulation.
  • Bladder: feels when her bladder is full; 7 cath./day
  • Independence: has knee-ankle-foot-ortheses (KAFOs) made-to-measure in the U.S.A. but has never used them in the U.S.A.; needs no help for transfers; can do her toilet, dress and cook without help; can drive an adapted car.

Beginning of treatment: 26 Apr 2004; End of treatment: 28 May 2004.
Number of sessions:
35 sessions, i.e. 17 hours and 30 minutes of laser treatment.
Frequency: 1 to 2 sessions a day except on Saturdays and Sundays.

1. Independence

  • Same as before.

2. Stability

  • 24 May 2004: can keep her balance for 2-4 seconds when she stands in her KAFOs between the parallel bars - she does not hold the bars.
  • 26 May 2004: can keep her balance for 30 seconds when she stands in her KAFOs between the parallel bars - she does not hold the bars (she leans backwards (shoulders) to keep her balance).
  • 28 May 2004: can keep her balance for 30 seconds in KAFOs and stand straight (she does not lean backwards anymore - it is normal again).

3. Mobility

  • 3 May 2004: feels the need to stand up immediately.

4.1. Voluntary movements

  • 4 May 2004: beginnings of voluntary movement of the 2nd toe in her right foot.
  • 26 May 2004: beginnings of voluntary movement of the 2nd, 3rd toes in her left foot.
  • 4 May 2004: voluntary contraction of the quadriceps tendon above the kneecap in her right and left legs + slight flexing and stretching of the thighs (grade 2). See videos.

4.2. Walking

  • 24 May 2004: walking with her KAFOs between bars by pushing a three-wheeled-walker, and on a treadmill.
  • 24 May 2001: can ride a stationary bike forward and backward by pushing on the pedals without any help to start or stop.

5. Sensory level

  • Light touch:
    13 May 2004: sensitivity altered below the SCI level; feels pins and needles, pinpricks, tingling, electricity and pressure in patches.
  • Pressure:
    13 May 2004: sensitivity altered below the SCI level, feels pins and needles, pinpricks, tingling, electricity in patches.
    17 May 2004: normal sensation to pressure (digital pressure) in the lumbar area; feels pressure in her buttocks when sitting on her wheelchair.
  • Pain:
    13 May 2004: sensitivity altered below the SCI level; feels pins and needles, pinpricks, tingling, electricity and pain in patches; feels knocks in her bones, but not always in her muscles.
  • Warmness:
    13 May 2004: sensitivity altered below the SCI level; feels pins and needles, pinpricks, tingling, electricity and warmness in patches; can feel the warmth from a heater or from the sun.
  • Cold:
    3 May 2004: felt the cold of the tiles under her feet for the first time; reaction to cold below the SCI level.
    17 May 2004: can feel the cold (evaporation of surgical spirit) from T12 to S3 on her back.
  • Pinprick:
    Does not know.
  • Sweats under her SCI level when she does physical exercises.
  • Feels the water running on her skin below her SCI level.

4. Bowels and bladder

  • Bowels:
    13 May 2004: feels when her bowels are full; normal evacuation of stools by pushing on her abdominal muscles with her hands; digital stimulation now useless.
  • Bladder:
    13 May 2004: feels when her bladder is full; feels when she introduces the catheter (meatus); can pass water normally by contracting her abdominal muscles; can hold the water for approx. 10 minutes (before the laserponcture® treatment, she could not hold it more than 5 minutes).
