C5/6 incomplete

  • Motor system:
    Shoulder, elbows, writs, and hips: normal.
    Fingers, knees, ankles and left toes: partial + right lower limb weaker.
    No voluntary movement in right toes.
  • Sensory system:
    Touch, pressure and pain: blurred and diminished on her arms, forearms and hands; none over the rest of her body.
  • Bowels:
    Can feel when her bowels are full; normal evacuation.
  • Bladder:
    Can feel when her bladder is full; passes water normally but cannot hold it, thus used to pass water every 2 hours.
  • Intimate sensations: normal.
  • Can move in her bed and turn over when she sleeps at night since 2001.
  • Walks with two sticks since Oct. 1999.

Beginning of treatment: 25 Feb 2002

Frequency: 3 to 4 stays of one week a year

1. Independence

  • Independent in daily life activities (bathing, toileting, dressing, cooking, meals - can cut her meat). It is easier since she has undergone laserponcture® treatment.

2. Stability

  • 1 March 2003: can feel her feet when she walks and does not need to control their position in space when she gets up.
  • Has a better stability, can turn round on one foot since Nov. 2003.

  • Forgets her stick more and more often.

3. Mobility

  • Can move better in her bed and easier to get up from bed (constant improvement).
  • Easier to do the housework since her first laserponcture® session.
  • 11 June 2004: has a better balance: can undress normally, no need to sit or hold herself to something, or think how to do it.
  • 23 Nov. 2004: can do the housework (hoovering, etc.). Patricia is stronger, more active and more supple in every movement.

4.1. Voluntary motricity

  • 6 May 2003: can move her left hand easier (kneading)
  • 16 July 2003: movement in her 1st and 4th finger (right hand) is easier; movement of fingers in her left hand is easier (except 3rd finger); can sign and write with her right hand; can move her left ankle and toes; can pick up something on the ground.
  • 8 Sept. 2003: can move 3rd finger in her left hand and has more movement in her right half body.
  • 30 Oct. 2003: movements of her right upper limb is better; same for her right ankle and toes.
  • 11 June 2004: can move her legs apart; however her lower limbs are still turned inwards and rotation, even passive is still limited.
  • 11 June 2004: fingers movement:
       - can button up her clothes.
       - can cut ham, bread, fish but not meat (yet).

  • 23 Nov. 2004: voluntary movement in all her fingers but the right index which less supple. Voluntary movement of 4th and 5th right toes (no voluntary movement of her right ankle, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd right toes).

4.2. Walking

  • 25 Feb. 2002 (first laserponcture® sessions): can walk with two sticks.
  • Can contract her right and left knee-cap since Oct. 2002; begins to walk with only one stick.
  • Dec. 2003: walks with no stick at home (helps herself with the walls); forgets her stick more and more often.
  • 11 June 2004: her lower limbs are stronger; can control the movement of her right foot when climbing stairs. Her right foot does not lolled any more and stays straight; she can climb down steps with one foot on each (normally).

5. Sensory level

  • Light touch:
    Feeling to touch sharper on her hands and the back of her lower limbs (check-up of 16 July 2003), on her thighs, feet, toes, hands and fingers (check-up of 8 Sept. 2003).
    More generally, feeling to touch sharper all over her body (check-up of 15 Dec. 2003).
  • Pressure:
    Feeling to pressure improves constantly in her feet, back, lower limbs, and lower back (check-up of 16 July 2003); feeling to pressure is better all over her body (check-up of 8 Sept. 2003); normal feeling to pressure at 90% all over her body (check-up of 15 dec. 2003).
  • Pain:
    Check-up of 16 July 2003: no improvement.
    Check-up of  8 Sept. 2003: feeling to pain has improved all over her body.
    Check-up of 15 dec. 2003: recovery of normal feeling to pain at 90%.
  • Hot:
    Since Oct. 2002: feeling to hot all over her body but blurred feeling (can feel hot from the sun or heater or hot water).
    Check-up of  16 July 2003: same.
    Check-up of 8 Sept. 2003 and 30 Oct. 2003: feeling to hot has improved constantly.
    Check-up of 15 Dec. 2003: recovery of normal feeling to hot at 75% all over her body.
    Check-up of 11 June 2004: feels the warmth from the sun on her skin below her SCI level.
  • Cold:
    Since Oct. 2002: feeling to cold all over her body (cold water and cold temperatures).
    Check-up of 16 July 2002: same.
    Check-up of 8 Sept. 2003 and 30 Oct. 2003: feeling to cold has improved constantly.
    Check-up of 15 Dec. 2003: recovery of normal feeling to cold at 90% all over her body.
    When she feels cold, she warms herself up by covering herself with a blanket or sitting next to a heater.
  • 6 April 2004: area in her back where sensibility was numb has come back to normal.
  • 5 April 2004: normal sensibility in her 10 fingers has come back except tip of the fingers which are still numb.

Check-up of 11 June 2004: sensibility returning back to normal all over her body (progress monitored through the questionnaires filled in by the patient).

Pinprick test on 23 Nov. 2004 done at the clinic: normal except the tip of the 5th right finger, right big toe and 2nd right toe.

6. Bowels and bladder

  • Bowels:
    Feels when empties her bowels ince April 2002.
    Since Nov. 2002: intestinal transit is more regular and evacuation of stools easier. It has regularly improved since Nov. 2002.
  • Bladder:
    Feels when passes urine since April 2002.
    Since Oct. 2003, passes water when she needs to since she is more confident to walk and reaches the bathroom quicker; can hold water better. It has regularly improved over the last 12 months.
