Hospital report from the
Neurosurgical Department, Nicosia, General Hospital, 12 Dec 2003:
C5-C6 complete flaccid quadriplegia
- Motor and sensory systems : none below C5-C6 dermatoms.
- Voluntary movement in her shoulders and elbows, wrists: tenodesis.
- Bowels: can feel when her bowels are full; uses suppositories 3
times a day.
- Bladder: can feel when bladder is full at 500 cc through rapid
heartbeat and goose bumps.
- Passive rotation of left hip reduced to 10° because of the osteoma
which "freezes" the articulation.

Beginning of
treatment: 12 Feb 2002
1. Independence
- Toileting: no assistance needed since March 2003; puts make-up with
no assistance since 27 June 2002.
- Meals: can hold a plastic glass in her right hand since April 2002; eats
with no assistance since Dec. 2002.
- Can push her wheelchair on a flat road since Dec. 2002.
- June 2004: can hold a plastic glass
half full with her left hand and drink it ; can cut mushrooms with her
right hand ; can write and paint with her right hand.
- Oct. 2004: can paint a friend's nails.
- 8 Nov. 2004: can paint her nails.
- 12 nov. 2004: can drink with her right
hand with a normal glass.
2. Stability
- Can stand one hour between parallel bars since 28 May 2002 in
her KAFOs articulated at the knee and ankle levels, made in Bourges,
France. When standing, can feel the pressure of her body on her hips
since April 2003.
- 11 June 2004: has a better balance
between the parallel bars.
3. Mobility
- Since
29 Oct. 2003: movement in her lower limbs: when sends an order, feels pins and
needles in her hips down to her toes but with no visible movement.
- Moves better in bed since Oct. 2002.
- Has a better sitting position in her wheelchair since Oct. 2002.
- Settles better in her wheelchair since April 2003.
- June 2004: can write and paint with her
right hand.
- 16 Nov. 2004: sitting position in her
wheelchair improves constantly + can move better on her wheelchair:
the size of her osteoma in right hip is less important, her hip can thus
move more freely; Elena is now sitting straight in her wheelchair and
has no longer back pain.
Elena can sit up in bed and transfer from bed to wheelchair and
vice-versa with the assistance of one person only; can move the upper
part of her body more and more in bed.
4.1. Volontary motricity
- Can move her wrists.
- Since 27 Nov. 2003, feels pins and needles when she sends an
order to move her left thumb anf first finger +
beginning of a movement visible.
- 12 Nov. 2004: thumb, index and 3rd
finger moves better.
4.2. Walking
- May - June 2004: begins to walk with walker in her KAFOs and the help of two
people.
- 8 Nov. 2004: Elena took a step with her
left lower limb without any assistance.
- 23 Nov. 2004: takes steps everyday with
her left lower limb, can only lift the heel of her right lower limb.
5. Sensory level
6. Bowels and bladder
- Bowels:
Can feel when her bowels are full through hot, rapid heartbeat and/or
goose bumps since July 2003; uses enemas every other day; needs a
20-minutes massage before evacuating stools.
12 Nov. 2004:
uses enema every other day or every three days but evacuates stools
normally between 2 enemas.
Evacuates stools normally the day after enema more and more often, thus
uses enema every 3 days and not every other day.
Needs only a 10-minutes massage of abdominal muscles before evacuating
stools. Evacuated stools twice spontaneously without any massage last
summer.
- Bladder:
Can feel when her bladder is full normally (abdominal pressure) but also
under warmness, rapid heart beat and goose bumps since
29 Oct. 2003.
Passes water by pushing on her abdomen since June 2003 (checks
3 times a day with catheter).
11 June 2004: can feel when her bladder is
full and bladder can hold more water:
- 200 cc in April-May 2004.
- 300 cc in June 2004, 150cc to 200c remains after
urination.
Nov. 2004: the feeling when her bladder is
full is more and more normal.
12 Nov. 2004: can hold water for 2 minutes; uses a commode to
pass water; only 50cc to 100cc remains after natural urination; can also
pass water when lying in bed.
- Intimate sensations:
12 Nov. 2004: has recovered the pain she
had before her accident when she has her periods: pain and warmness in
abdominal muscles and back.
Feels pins and needles in labia minora and majora when the pressure of
water is high.
21 Aug. 2003: Vascular test of her lower limbs:
recunalization of the right femoral vein.
The size of her osteoma has been reduced by working on
her right hip passively (x-ray of osteoma).
